How To Pinpoint Your Ideal Career–Exercise 1
Imagine a room full of 30 graduate students, trained in psychotherapy and fresh out of mental health agency internships. Picture these students facing the end of their school, end of their community, and end of their routines: they’re heading into uncertainty, most not having any idea what comes next. Private practice? More agency work? What do they do with these new skills now that the training is over?
This is the situation my professor Sherene Zolno faced a week ago–30 mentally saturated, angsty, confounded people looking for answers. What did she do to help us work through some of our soul-searching? She asked us to answer four questions. I’m passing them along to my readers who are walking a similar path of self-inquiry.
- What are you not called to do in life?
- What can you do (ie what are you capable of doing)?
- What are you masterful at?
- What are you called to do?
Feel free to list as many things as you can think of for each question. Then take a look at what you’ve written, call a friend and discuss.

Continuing my search…..These questions are great. Always on a quest, I keep searching for my own answers. I took a class called “Finding the work you love, loving the work you find” by a man called Subhan at the Sandpoint Educational Center a few years ago….we pondered such questions, but sometimes, one falls back into routines. Its good to revisit these things.
